Panasonic goes optical - our WA relay offers components for optical data transmission
In telecommunications conventional data transmission over copper wires has reached its limits. Data is increasingly being transmitted over optical networks, permitting transmission rates up into the terahertz range. Panasonic's answer to this development is its new WA relay.

The WA relay is an optical switch that allows single mode fibers (9/125/900) to be switched in 1 x 2 and 2 x 2 configurations. Measuring just (L/W/H) 31 x 16 x 9mm, it provides an isolation of 60dB and an insertion loss of max. 1dB (typically 0.5dB) at a wavelength of 1550nm. Switch over is performed by introducing a prism into the path of the rays, which guarantees repeatability of less than 0.1dB and a return loss of lower than 50dB.

The control side uses a well proven polarised, bi-stable magnet system (1 or 2-coil), that only requires one pulse for switch over and consumes no power in its end positions.

Typical applications for this optical relay can be found in long-haul data transmission. It is used here specifically in redundancy circuits and OADM (optical add-drop multiplexer) in DWDM (dense wavelength division multiplexing) technology. Further applications can be found in test systems for optical components.
