The environmental century

The 21st century will be known as the "environmental century". During this century, not only will corporate action be necessary but social systems and personal values will have to be redefined. In this respect, each company, each institution and each individual plays an important role. For this reason, policies in harmony with the environment are central to all of Panasonic's corporate activities, expressed clearly in our "Environmental Statement":
"Fully aware that humankind has a responsibility to respect and preserve the delicate balance of nature, we at Panasonic acknowledge our obligation to maintain and nurture the ecology of this planet. Accordingly, we pledge ourselves to the prudent, sustainable use of the earth's resources and the protection of the natural environment, while we strive to fulfil our corporate mission of contributing to enhanced prosperity for all."

The idea of respecting the environment and society is not new for Panasonic; it is part of the corporate guidelines laid down by our founder, Konosuke Matsushita, over 75 years ago.

Environmental vision

In suit with its "Environmental Statement", Panasonic has announced its new vision for the environment. It is based upon an economic policy in harmony with the environment. We thereby commit ourselves to a concept that connects environmentally friendly technologies with ecological thought and is dedicated to creating a recycling-oriented society.
To realize its environmental vision, Pansonic has introduced the Green Plan 2018, which succeeds our Green Plan 2010 and outlines environmental objectives for the entire Panasonic Group. Green Plan 2018 defines goals for the core items found in our Green Index, e.g. reducing CO2 emissions, as well as conserving water, minimizing the impact of hazardous chemical substances, and promoting biodiversity.
We at Panasonic have committed ourselves to the Green Plan 2018 and will continue to work together with everyone in society to address shared global environmental issues.

'eco ideas' - Panasonic's environmental initiative

To unify all of Panasonic's environmental activities in one, central term, the 'eco ideas' campaign was born. The rubric "eco ideas" includes all environmental activities initiated by Panasonic and its subsidiaries.
The "eco ideas" concept:

  • "eco ideas" for products
  • "eco ideas" for factories
  • "eco ideas" for everyone, everywhere
  • Compliance
''Eco ideas" encompass the following areas: the production of environmentally friendly products, the conscious, responsible handling of chemicals during the manufacturing process, reducing waste and conservation of natural resources. In addition, we advocate other measures that protect the environment.

Environmentally friendly products
Already during the product development process, Panasonic places a great deal of emphasis on ecological consciousness. The development of energy saving products and their widespread use is promoted at all times. Besides improving product functions, Panasonic focuses on reducing environmental stress over products' entire life.
Thereby three aspects are observed:

  • Slow global warming
  • Efficient use of resources
  • Avoid using certain chemicals.

Using environmentally friendly materials (Green Procurement)
Regarding our efforts to produce environmentally friendly products, we go beyond the local legal requirements. Within our Green Procurement activities, our suppliers must also adhere to our stringent guidelines for chemicals (Chemical Substance Management Rank Guidelines for Products), which set voluntary limits on the use of certain chemical substances.

'eco ideas' for factories

Clean factories
Panasonic is striving to have "clean factories" globally. Our central goal is to minimize the effects of our factories on the environment while simultaneously making them more profitable. Thereby we do not just pay attention to the materials that enter the production cycle, we also look at energy consumption and waste (emissions, waste water, etc.).
Within this framework, Panasonic has created an internal accreditation system for production sites with minimal environmental impact. All Panasonic factories are to be successively turned into "clean factories". By 2011, 90% of all global manufacturing sites are to have reached this standard.

Production in Europe
Following the global announcement, Panasonic Electric Works Europe AG German Factory and Pfaffenhofen and its sister factory, Panasonic Electric Works Czech Factory in Plana/CZ, received the "Clean Factory Award" in recognition of continuous improvements in the aforementioned areas. Being close to the customers who use the products, these factories produce electromechanical relays, particularly for safety, installation and automotive applications.

Already in 1998, environmental activities played a key role at these sites so that they achieved ISO 14001 certification the same year. The current award once again underlines the important role that the environment plays for our corporation, rewarding our efforts for producing relays that use non-hazardous substances, from development to production to logistics.

CF accreditation criteria
Each factory is accredited with points for its environmental impact reduction achievements such as reduction of CO2 emissions and waste. The factories can then receive bonus points if their performance exceeds the base requirements.
